At 4G World 2009, Amdocs (NYSE: DOX), the leading provider of customer experience systems, has today announced a four-phase framework to help service providers successfully evolve to 4G.
The communications industry is moving quickly towards an era of a trillion connected devices, which Amdocs calls “Tera-play”– and which requires 4G as a key enabler. Recognizing the need for a clearly defined transformation strategy for service providers, the Amdocs four-phase framework outlines the activities required for the rapid, efficient and profitable evolution to 4G. By viewing the transformation to 4G as a single cohesive project and by planning accordingly, service providers can better address the challenges of each phase to achieve the final goal of maximizing efficiencies and revenues from 4G investments. As part of the Amdocs CES product portfolio, Amdocs offers 4G -ready products and solutions to support service providers through each of the four phases, including packaged solutions for automating network deployments, scalable real-time charging, and an applications store.
The four-phase 4G framework is defined by Amdocs as follows:
* Phase 1 – Network and commercial planning -The first phase encompasses strategic network and commercial planning for the 4G transformation, with the goal of gaining a broad perspective of the full impact of the final rollout. In this phase, the focus is on fast and effective network planning, ensuring that the end-to-end network is structured and rolled out as efficiently as possible. This phase also includes detailed planning of migration and operations, a full review of monetization strategies, business and operational support system (BSS and OSS) requirements, and the development of a framework of processes that the service provider must implement.
* Phase 2 – Network roll-out – The second phase involves efficiently managing the complex roll-out of the 4G network infrastructure, ensuring optimal use of resources and maximize efficiencies. Typically, service providers adopt Carrier Ethernet for backhaul of co-located 2G/3G and 4G technologies in multiple sites. In parallel, service providers can enhance their BSS and OSS environment to expedite the market roll-out of 4G services.
* Phase 3 – Market roll-out – In the third phase, service providers roll out 4G services to the market. The migration process is critical and must be tightly managed whether moving from CDMA to LTE or from 2G/3G to 4G within the GSM path. By this phase, BSS and OSS systems must be prepared to handle the challenges and requirements posed by 4G services, such as quality of service and exponential growth in volume and complexity of events, devices and partner relationships.
* Phase 4 – Monetization – The final phase focuses on driving new revenues from 4G investments with services based on new 4G network and capabilities, especially in the areas of content, commerce and advertising. To maximize revenue, service providers should implement personalization engines and processes designed to act upon intelligence in real time, and should manage experiences across content, data, devices, applications and networks.
The framework provides a structured path for service providers to plan and execute their 4G evolution process. The end result is a carefully designed, efficient and optimized environment that delivers simple, personalized online experiences to customers which are profitable to the service provider.
