I spent 16 months working in Sales at a previous company that used Sugar CRM. It did a relatively good job of tracking and reporting with useful tools and everything I needed on a regular basis.

Some pretty major inconveniences arise when generating opportunities/converting leads. There were times where double entry was necessary when converting leads to opportunities. The lead data would not automatically move to the opportunity when converting and this became very annoying.

Personally, SugarCRM brings back nothing but horrible memories. I’d rather be repeatedly stabbed in the face with a spork than to have to use that clunky interface ever again. Customizing the system was a complete hassle. Updating contact fields and creating custom reports was too tedious and inefficient of a process.

I had a number of difficulties with the email capabilities of the system as well, and needed my IT team to get into the system to fix the problem. The entire team was even locked out of the system at one point because the software decided to get buggy and change all passwords.

I had a number of other problems as well, and when I contacted their support staff, they were unable to help me and just referred me to their documentation, FAQs, and knowledgebase. I don’t know about any of you, but when I call a support line it means that I’ve tried everything else, and have reached my last resort. I was very disappointed with this system and support, especially after hearing it spoken so highly of.

As a business that thrives on excellent customer interactions, we were looking for a solution that would put the customer first. SugarCRM was a worthwhile choice for us. After weeks of futile searching, we chose SugarCRM as our go-to open source CRM solution. With our budget and resource constraints, SugarCRM was the compromise between affordability and functionality.

SugarCRM has a robust set of CRM features which isn’t entirely common for open source CRM solutions from my understanding. The solution has definitely cleaned up our lead and opportunity management efforts, thereby enabling us to deliver the quality customer service our clients deserve. Although the reporting tool could use a bit of a quality upgrade, the solution is just what the doctor ordered for our business.
